As a long list of celebrities prepared for the annual Met Gala, I got a preview of the exhibit they were all about to enjoy, China: Through the Looking Glass. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the approximately 30,000 square-foot show “explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries.” From 1990s Chanel Haute Couture to porcelain dating back to the 15th century, the exhibit juxtaposes the old with the new, showcasing the lines of inspiration that carry through across centuries.
